Part of becoming a Jaycee involves learning a new language: JayceeSpeak! As with most organizations, the Jaycees have terms and abbreviations for everything. Study this page and you'll be able to distinguish a CPG from OYC in no time!

A&I (AWARDS AND INSTALLATION BANQUET)
Annual formal chapter banquet where the new board is sworn in and chapter awards are given.

ARMBRUSTER COMPETITION
This quarterly competition is for Jaycees with over one year in the organization. This competition is based on 50% resume and 50% on five Jaycee fact and opinion questions in a job interview situation.

BLUE CHIP
A chapter management program designed to assist local chapters in developing the total Jaycee concept.

BROWNFIELD COMPETITION
As for Armbruster, but for Jaycees with less than one year of experience.

BYLAWS
Rules and regulations the Jaycees employ to determine government and procedures.

CHAIRPERSON
The individual charged with the responsibility for the completion of a project. The chairperson heads a committee and provides motivation and leadership for its members.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
The programs of a chapter through which an individual member is given the opportunity to apply learned leadership and management skills in fulfilling chosen social responsibility.

CPG
Chairman's Planning Guide.  A series of 15 questions used to properly plan, execute and evaluate all Jaycee programs and projects.

DEGREES OF JAYCEES
A program designed to help individual members receive the benefits of their membership; a Junior Chamber career path outline. The program consists of three phases divided into 10 degrees.

DISTRICT
The state is further divided into districts. Each district has its own Director to assist its local chapters at the state level through communication and guidance. The Burbank Chapter is in District 11. Our current District Governor is Eric Palmstrom from the Pasadena Jaycees.

HONORARY MEMBER
Membership conferred upon an individual whose contribution to the organization has been so outstanding as to merit this honor.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
The self-improvement programs of a chapter, aimed at teaching, developing, and increasing the individual member’s personal and leadership skills.

JAYCEE CREED
A statement of philosophy and beliefs adopted by The U.S. Junior Chamber and JCI. The Creed was written by the late C. William Brownfield of Columbus, Ohio, in 1946. Brownfield later served as national vice president.

JAYCEE NIGHT (Also known as a GMM or GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING)
A bi-monthly opportunity for members to learn about upcoming events, learn something new and fun, and raise issues, ask questions, or give suggestions.

JCI
Junior Chamber International. The worldwide Jaycees organization now operating in more than 100 countries.

JCI SENATOR
The highest honor bestowed by Junior Chamber International upon an individual member for their contributions to the Jaycees. A JCI Senator is a life member of JCI.

JCI WORLD CONGRESS
The Annual Meeting of Junior Chamber International held each year in November. Delegates from member nations conduct the organization’s business.

LOTS
Local Officers Training Schools. A training service offered by your state organization.

ON-TO
A slogan used in promoting attendance at State and National annual conventions.

OYC
Outstanding Young Californian. A program to recognize young people (non-farmers) of Jaycee age.

OYF
Outstanding Young Farmer. A program to recognize young farmers of Jaycee age.

PEARL
California Order of the Pearl (the Pearls):  An auxiliary organization within the California Jaycees that has been around since the early 1980s. Members are inducted after meeting specific requirements for long and distinguished service to the Jaycees organization and making a lasting positive impression on both chapter and community. At one time, it was the women’s post-Jaycee social organization but now recognizes outstanding achievement regardless of gender. The CA Pearls honor up to 5 new inductees annually. The CA Pearls have taken the responsibility of handling judging Project Books from the Chapters both quarterly and annually at Awards Congress. 

PORTFOLIO
An area of responsibility in unit management.  Chapter portfolios typically include: Community Development, Individual / Professional Development, Membership, Marketing, and State Director.

PRIORITY PROJECTS
The Junior Chamber is an organization that focuses on building young men and women into effective leaders in communities across the nation. To develop these key leadership skills Jaycees help people through community action projects. Although each chapter has signature projects that address specific needs in their community, there are several projects that the organization conducts annually on a nationwide basis which are called National Priority Projects. There are Statewide Priority Projects as well.

ROBERT’S RULES OF ORDER
A guidebook of parliamentary procedure written by General Henry A. Robert (U.S. Army) in 1874.  These rules provide for the protection of the rights of the majority, the rights of the minority, the rights of individuals and the rights of those absent, in conduct of meetings.

SENATOR
The highest honor bestowed in the Jaycee organization. Presented by Junior Chamber International, it is awarded for long and distinguished service to the Jaycees organization.

SPEAK UP
A program designed to improve an individual’s verbal communication skills.

SPRINGBOARD
An individual activation program designed to aid chapters in activating new members.

STATE BOARD MEETING
A bi-annual meeting of all the chapters in the state.

TIGER
California Order of the Tiger (the Tigers):  An auxiliary fraternal organization within the California Jaycees. Members are inducted after meeting specific requirements for long and distinguished service to the Jaycees organization. At one time, it was the men’s post-Jaycee social organization but now recognizes genderless outstanding achievement. Beyond recognition is the purpose of organizing the CA Tigers to act as advisors, trainers, and mentors to the Jaycee members of today. There are currently more than 900 CA Tigers nation-wide.

TOYA
Ten Outstanding Young Americans. Each year during its Annual Meeting, the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce honors 10 dynamic young American at an awards congress.
